If your cabbage heads begin to crack and split open it usually
means they are growing too fast (usually because they have gotten too
much fertilizer). You can slow this by simply grabbing the cabbage head
with both hands (don't be shy!) and twisting the plant about ½ a turn.
This will prune some roots and slow inner head growth. If after a few
days the crack continues then go ahead and turn it another ¼ turn more.
If left alone the plant will send up a flower stalk and want to go to seed.
