Foam cups as the ultimate seed starting devices.

I start seeds in margarine bowls.  Margarine bowls have lids, keeps in moisture, and act like a mini greenhouse.  Because not every seed germinates, and I can pick the strongest seedlings from those that do germinate.  I use the cheapest potting soil I can get to fill the foam cups. Foam cups almost eliminate transplant shock and can be used again when washed in a mild bleach solution.  I use medium size and large.  With a ballpoint pen, the foam cup can be easily marked with the variety and other details.  Sometimes the outside info gets comprimised - so mark the bottom also - that - being out of the sun - always stays on. I use a good pen like a Bic.

This is also a great way to recycle and keep those styrofoam cups out of our landfills.  You can get enough for your seedlings by having all your friends save any cups they come across for you to use for this purpose.  I have been using foam cups for ultimate seed starting devices since 1968.
